At around 10:45am today (2/21), an 84 year old man was struck and killed by west bound train at the B Street railroad crossing in St. Albans. The man, Ronald E. Hoover, was walking north on B Street and walked in front of the CSX train. The engineer reportedly used the horn and bell of the engine in hopes to get the man's attention, but he kept walking. The train was going 48 mph prior to the incident so, it would be impossible for the train to stop in time.
Mr. Hoover lived with a daughter in the Amandaville area of St. Albans. She told officers that Mr. Hoover had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease about two years ago. She also said that at he was a former railroad employee and felt comfortable around trains.
On the morning of February 3, 2010, SAPD officers acted on a tip and performed a trash pull at 2644 Furlong Avenue. A "trash pull" is where officers simply pick up the trash that has been set out on the curb as garbage to be picked up. Patrolman Brandon Tagayun picked up this trash and went through it at SAPD.
Among the items found were
- Receipt for purchase of a funnel, rubber gloves, peroxide, & alcohol - Numerous matchbooks without covers & striker plates - Stained mason jars - Rubber tubing - Empty bottle of nail polish remover (100% acetone) - Several empty bottles of hydrogen peroxide - Numerous empty cold medicine packages
Ptl. Tagayun applied for and was granted a search warrant later that morning. The result of this search warrant yielded what had been a working meth lab. Samples were taken for lab analysis. Also a few rounds of rufle ammunition were found on the premises (7.62 mm).
In all, four persons were arrested in connection during the early afternoon of Feb 3.
1) Kevin King (34 yoa from St. Albans) was charged with Operation of a Clandestine Drug Lab
2) Steven A. King (32 yoa from St. Albans) was charged with Operation of a Clandestine Drug Lab
3) David A. Fleck (43 yoa with no fixed address) was charged with Operation of a Clandestine Drug Lab
4) Brenda Miller (52 yoa from St. Albans) was charged with Obstructing an Officer
All parties have been arraigned in Kanawha County Magistrate Court
SAPD officers were called to Thomas Memorial Hospital by the staff at around 8pm on Monday February 1st. A woman in the E.R. said she had been stabbed in the abdomen in the 2800 block of Claremont Ave (just east of Ordinance Park area).
An officer responded to the hospital where Amber Morgan (22 yoa from SA) said at around 6pm on Monday, February 1st she was walking to a nearby residence to pick up her daughter, when she was approached by a black male wearing all black who asked her for a cigarette. She said she felt a pain in her stomach, lost consciousness, and awoke to find her debit card and small amount of cash missing. She said she went to the residence where her daughter was and was driven to Thomas Hospital.
Morgan did receive a stab wound to her abdomen. She is still in Thomas Hospital, but the injury is not thought to be life threatening.
