Utility Pole Pulled Down

Thursday, November 12, 2009
7:23 PM

Shortly before 3pm, a utility poles was pulled over in the area of 6th Avenue & C Street. A tractor-trailer truck was pulling out of a parking lot when the trailer snagged a low-hanging phone line. Unknowing, the driver kept going which resulted in the utility pole being snapped in two. This pulled down phone & electrical wires. This knocked out the power for several blocks.

AEP & Verizon were called immediately. AEP responded within just a few hours period erected a new utility pole, installed a new street light, got the power back on.

Verizon didn't arrive on scene until about 7:30pm and they could not or would not provide METRO Communications with an estimated arrival time until after they were on scene.

The tractor trailer was not an over-sized truck, so the driver will not be charged with anything resulting from this incident. The phone lines were hanging too low. There were no injuries from the lines down, but at least two cars received some damage from the falling wires.

Sgt. Jim Butler is investigating.
