SAPD received a call from a resident in the 2200 block of Grant Avenue at about 3:50am. He said he was awakened by a noise inside his home. When he got up to investigate, he found a man in his house. He confronted the man who ran to the back door of the home and fled leaving through a back gate and into an alley. The victim called SAPD. Responding officers began checking the area. Among the many items the victim reported stolen was a plasma TV that was about 50 inches. Sgt. Mike Dlugos found the plasma TV in the back of a pick up truck parked about 4 houses away. The victim identified it as his.
Further investigation led officers to a garage behind 2246 Grant Avenue that had been converted into a makeshift apartment. Officers found the owner of the truck staying there. His name is Herschel Dylan Cole (18 yoa originally from South Charleston). Officers had seen other items in the apartment from a window that appeared to be consistent with the victim's missing items. When confronted with the TV found in his truck and the items visible, he admitted to stealing the items. He said he picked the house out at random finding an unlocked back door. He said he worked for about 3 hours on stealing all of the items.
Cole was charged with Nighttime Burglary, a felony. He was taken to the South Central Regional Jail pending arraignment. The stolen property was returned to the victim.
